Hollywood star John Travolta mourns his wife Kelly Preston. She died at the age of 57. It is not the first time for the actor that an important woman in his life died of cancer.
Kelly Preston lost her two-year fight against breast cancer. John Travolta announced this on Instagram on Monday. The 66-year-old had to cope with several tragic strokes of fate in his life.
He was 20, she was 40
Kelly Preston is not the first loved one that John Travolta lost to cancer. At a young age, before his hit roles in “Saturday Night Fever” (1977) and “Grease” (1978), the actor was in a relationship with colleague Diana Hyland. He was then in her early 20s and she was in her early 40s. The age difference was 18 years. They were seen together in the film “The Boy in the Plastic Bubble” (1976), in which she played his mother. The two are said to have fallen in love while filming. A short time later she was diagnosed with breast cancer and a mastectomy was performed.
Diana Hyland died of breast cancer in 1977
Hyland and Travolta remained a couple until their death on March 27, 1977 at the age of 41. According to media reports, she is said to have died in his arms. In September of the same year, Diana Hyland posthumously won an Emmy Award for Best Supporting Actress for her performance in “The Boy in the Plastic Bubble”. At that time, Travolta accepted the prize on behalf of her. “Wherever you are, Diana, I love you,” he said on stage. “You did it, baby.”
Travolta’s mother also died of cancer
The next cancer death shook John Travolta’s life just a year later. His beloved mother, Helen Travolta, née Helen Cecilia-Burke, lost the fight against cancer in December 1978. She was 66 years old.
After these two tragic losses, John Travolta found the love of his life in Kelly Preston in the late 1980s. The couple married in 1991. Together they have three children together, of whom only two are still alive: the 20-year-old daughter Ella and son Benjamin, who saw the light of day in 2010.
The oldest son died at the age of 16
The eldest son Jett Travolta died in 2009 on a family vacation in the Bahamas at the age of 16. The exact circumstances of death are still not completely known. It is said on the death certificate that he died of an attack or seizure.
In April, Travolta congratulated his late son on his birthday via Instagram. Jett would have turned 28 this year. The Hollywood actor posted a black and white photo of himself and his son online and wrote: “Congratulations, Jetty. We love you.”
A family lawyer said the teenager had had seizures in the past. At the age of two, Jett Travolta was diagnosed with Kawasaki syndrome and successfully treated. This is a rare, febrile illness that usually only occurs in young children. For example, it can lead to vascular inflammation, heart disease and related problems.
Kelly Preston also stated on US television in 2012: “Jett was autistic.” John Travolta said in 2014 that his son’s death was “the worst” that “ever happened to him”.
Now John Travolta has to cope with the death of his wife. She had “bravely” fought cancer for two years. Her illness was not previously made public. “Kelly’s love and life will always be remembered,” said the actor on Instagram. He also writes that he will withdraw from the publicity for a while “to be there for my children who have lost their mother”. Daughter Ella also dedicates touching farewell words to her mother on Instagram.
Kelly Preston, who was born in Hawaii, was also a successful actress. She appeared in 1988 in “Twins – Gemini”, 1996 in “Jerry Maguire – Game of Life” or 1998 in “The Guru”. In 2003 she played Amanda Bynes’ mother in “What Girls Want”. In 2010 she was the film mother of Miley Cyrus in the Nicholas Sparks film “With you at my side”.
Most recently she was seen in 2018 alongside John Travolta in the mafia film “Gotti”. Her apparently last film, “Off the Rails – Derailed”, in which Judi Dench also plays, is in the post-production phase according to “IMDb”.
