The new year has come – and with it the sniffing nose. If you want to drink health, you should try jiaogulan (Gynostemma pentaphyllum) in tea form. Because Jiaogulan tea (also Jiao Gu Lan or Xiancao) is not without reason called herb of immortality. Jiaogulan is drunk daily in the Guizhou region of southern China. This is also supposedly the reason why there are an above average number of people over 100 in this region. Jiaogulan is not only a real benefit for health. In contrast to other healthy teas, which cannot keep up with their positive effects in terms of taste, the pleasantly sweet-tart tea is a delight for the palate.
Effect of Jiaogulan tea
In 1991, the Jiaogulan herb was named one of the 10 most important toning herbs at the Conference of Traditional Medicines. The plant was reported as early as the 15th century AD.
The effect of the herb is based on the active ingredient of the ginseng plant. However, the ginsenosides contained in Jiaogulan tea are many times more concentrated than in ginseng itself. The high content of gypsosides makes Jiaogulan tea so special. Also included are polysaccharides, amino acids, vitamins and minerals, which in combination are beneficial for all kinds of symptoms. No matter whether high or low blood pressure, high or low sugar values - Jiaogulan always has a balancing and harmonizing effect. The Miracle Grass has an important reputation as an anti-aging plant.

Grow Jiaogulan yourself
You can also grow Jiaogulan yourself. The cultivation of Gynostemma pentaphyllum, a type of plant from the pumpkin family on the window sill in the apartment, enables fresh Jiaogulan tea to be harvested all year round. Jiaogulan likes it warm and loves a partially shaded spot. The herb grows quickly and can also be dried. Salad dishes can also be refined with the young shoot tips. For cultivation, it is advisable to place the seeds in lukewarm water, soak them and then grow them. Warning: The climbing plant is said to grow 6 cm a day. The private balcony is also ideal for cultivation – the plant is winter-proof up to -18 degrees.
Jiaogulan tea preparation

Bring a liter of water to a boil (either by a kettle, on the stove or over a fireplace if available) and let it cool down to approx. 80 degrees Celsius for a few minutes (should be ready after 30 seconds). Pour in the water, add 2-3 teaspoons or 2 teabags of Jiaogulan cabbage with a teaspoon as needed and let it steep for two to three minutes. Cool down a little, sit back and enjoy. It becomes even more interesting when you let a small piece of ginger go with you. Sweetness is usually not necessary – if so with honey.
